Percy Jackson’s Greek Gods: A Review

February 20, 2025 | by Venkat Balaji

Mythology can be fascinating. However, it takes very little to screw up the storytelling to turn it into a very mundane read. One writer who managed to keep the fascination alive until the end is Rick Riordan. Rick Riordan is famously for his Percy Jackson series, which is a lineup of 5 books which explore the life of modern demigod Percy Jackson. It is a mythological fiction, and the book I’m reviewing today is not part of that. This was a supplementary book to that series. This books dives into the creation of titans, war between titans and gods, and the establishment of gods on Mount Olympus. Each god’s life, from birth to most famous stories, is told with humour and sarcasm infused beautifully. It is told from Percy Jackson’s perspective and Percy Jackson’s voice is filled with deadpan humor, pop culture references, and relatable commentary, making even the most complicated myths easy to follow. Instead of just stating facts, Riordan makes the gods feel like real, flawed characters, helping readers connect with them in a way that traditional textbooks often fail to do. Mind you, although Greek mythology is not particularly followed or religious these days, it takes some courage and intelligence to write it like this without offending ardent supporters of Greek mythology and possibly, the gods. Overall, despite it being described a children’s book, it is a great read for anyone with an interest in mythology or even just a funny book. I will finish off by saying I continue to reread it every now and then, and last time I checked, I’m not, at least legally, considered a child.
