The Anticipation Engine Part 2: The Psychology of Incompletion

While biological mechanisms explain the formation of short-term engagement loops, they do not fully account for their persistence across long gaps between seasons. Sustained viewing emerges from the psychology of incompletion.

The Zeigarnik effect is the tendency for unfinished tasks to remain more active in memory than completed ones. Cliffhangers keep narratives more cognitively active than completed plotlines. The brain treats unresolved conflicts as open tasks, similar to mental to-do lists. Streaming companies often exploit this by adding features like auto-play, which reduce the viewer’s ability to pause or disengage, thereby reinforcing the need to finish open narrative threads.

Central to this is curiosity. As explained by George Loewenstein in his Information Gap Theory, curiosity is a tension between the known and the unknown. Viewers often engage in mental simulation of possible narrative outcomes, which maintains anticipatory focus over extended periods. This sustained attention interacts with reward-based learning systems through mechanisms previously described in reward prediction error theory. Furthermore, behavioral research by Kahneman and Tversky has revealed that uncertainty intensifies emotional engagement more than predictable outcomes.

Whilst uncertainty and unresolved conflicts keep engagement high, extended recovery intervals disrupt continuity for creators. Binge watching solves that problem. Media psychologist Leonhard Reinecke argues that binge-watching reduces recovery intervals between viewing sessions, thereby extending sustained attention toward a series. Although it is the viewer’s choice to binge watch, it is the easy accessibility of previous episodes that strongly influence their choice.
